Degree Distinctions

There is often a distinction between the Bachelor of Arts (BA) and Bachelor of Science (BS) degrees. In general, a BA is typically awarded for degrees in the liberal arts and social sciences, with a goal of providing a well-rounded education. A BS degree is typically awarded for completing degrees that emphasize mathematics and science, with a focus on courses required for professional or pre-professional programs.  Additionally, there are widely recognized degrees for some disciplines, such as nursing with the Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) degree, and social work with the Bachelor of Social Work (BSW) degree.

For the graduate degree programs, in general, a Master of Arts (MA) is typically awarded for non-science degrees and a Master of Science (MS) degree is typically awarded for completing degrees that emphasize mathematics and science.  Additionally, there are widely recognized degrees for some disciplines, such as business administration with the Master of Business Administration (MBA) degree, nursing with the Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) degree, public administration with the Master of Public Administration (MPA) degree, and social work with the Master of Social Work (MSW) degree.
