Degree Distinctions

There is often a distinction between the Bachelor of Arts (BA) and Bachelor of Science (BS) degrees. In general, a BA is typically awarded for degrees in the liberal arts and social sciences, with a goal of providing a well-rounded education. A BS degree is typically awarded for completing degrees that emphasize mathematics and science, with a focus on courses required for professional or pre-professional programs.  Additionally, there are widely recognized degrees for some disciplines, such as the Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) and Bachelor of Social Work (BSW) degrees.

For the graduate degree programs, in general, a Master of Arts (MA) is typically awarded for non-science degrees and a Master of Science (MS) degree is typically awarded for completing degrees that emphasize mathematics and science.  Additionally, there are widely recognized degrees for some disciplines, such as the Master of Business Administration (MBA), Master of Public Administration (MPA), Master of Science in Nursing (MSN), and Master of Social Work (MSW) degrees.
