Program Description
The Master of Arts in Teaching with licensure program is a comprehensive program that offers students the opportunity to earn both a master’s degree and secondary education teacher licensure through the Illinois State Board of Education (ISBE). This degree program is intended for individuals who have earned a bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution in biology (or similar science), chemistry (or similar science), English, history (or similar social science), mathematics, or Spanish.
This graduate degree program can be completed within one year by full-time students for students entering the program having completed all ISBE required disciplinary course requirements.
Admission Requirements
AU Undergraduate Students seeking to enter the MAT Plus One program must submit:
- A completed Graduate Application for Admission (aurora.edu/auapply)
- A completed content course evaluation worksheet. Applicants must have a bachelor’s degree in biology, chemistry (or other science-related major), history (or other social science-related major), English, mathematics
- Have an academic record indicative of a high probability of success in graduate study with an undergraduate cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher
- Submit a current TB screen/test (within past 12 months). Cost incurred by student.
- Complete a criminal background check. Cost incurred by student.
External applicants seeking to enter the MAT Plus One program must submit:
- A completed Graduate Application for Admission (aurora.edu/auapply)
- Official transcripts from all previous undergraduate and graduate institutions attended
- Two letters of reference from persons able to attest to the student’s academic and/or professional potential
- Personal statement
- Resume

Graduate Degree Requirements
- Completion of all coursework specified by the graduate program.
- Cumulative GPA of at least 3.0 on a 4.0 scale, or higher if specified by the graduate program.
- Submission of all pre-graduation materials required by the graduate program.
- Acceptance of thesis or other required final project by the graduate program.
- Submission of two copies of approved thesis or project in a specified form together with payment of binding fee where applicable.
- Submission of Application for Graduation and payment of any graduation fees assessed by the university.
- In the case of certification programs, submission of all governmental forms.
- Residency Requirement: A minimum of 25% percent of the total credits required for the completion of the graduate degree or post-baccalaureate certificate or credential must be earned at Aurora University. Individual programs may establish more extensive residency requirements, including requirements that specific coursework be completed at Aurora University.
