Environmental studies is a subject that requires an understanding of issues transcending geographic and disciplinary boundaries to address local, regional, national, and global challenges. This course provides an introduction to the field by exploring the cultural, ethical, political, scientific, historical, and economic dimensions of human-environment interactions. Students will analyze evidence, arguments, and concepts through multiple disciplinary lenses, consider past and present environmental challenges, and examine efforts to understand and address them.

This course offers an introduction to environmental ethics. In addition to considering fundamental ethical concepts, themes, and questions, it examines the ways in which environmental ethics challenges the anthropocentric assumptions of traditional ethics by emphasizing biocentric and ecocentric ways of thinking. The course also explores the relationship between theory and practice, providing students with abundant opportunities to sharpen their reading, writing, speaking, and critical thinking skills as they consider ongoing environmental challenges.

This course is the capstone course of the Environmental Studies and Sustainability major. It examines the technical, political, economic, cultural, social, and administrative forces that shape environmental problems, policies, regulations, and management of natural resources. In addition to considering such broad themes, students design their own research projects, which they develop over the course of the semester.

Students will have the opportunity to gain work experience through an Environmental Studies and Sustainability internship. Students will work with a faculty coordinator to identify an organization where they can develop practical skills in the field. Specific new learning objectives will be set and agreed upon by the student, site coordinator, and faculty member. Permission of the instructor required.
