This course is designed to enable teaching candidates to develop the knowledge and techniques essential to effective teaching in the social studies content areas. It covers such areas as lesson planning and delivery, curriculum design, alternative teaching strategies, classroom arrangement, evaluation, and assessment. It also incorporates content specific to teaching Illinois history and government. In addition to the classroom hours, there is an accompanying practicum. This is usually the last course the student takes prior to student teaching. Placement applications for the practicum are due to the School of Education placement coordinator the January before the academic year of the practicum or for transfer students upon acceptance into the School of Education.
